Transparent.

If you are visible, you will be found. Clear profiles, transparent funding priorities and open communication create trust and facilitate effective partnerships, says Lisa Meyerhans, member of the Asuera Foundation's Board of Trustees and President of SwissFoundations.

Why is transparency crucial for future-proof philanthropy?

Lisa Meyerhans: Transparency is a signal – both internally and externally. When funding organisations disclose their priorities, exclusion criteria, processes and contact details, they create orientation and lower the barriers for exchanging information with suitable partners. This makes it clear: Where are the interests? Where are the points of contact? Transparency is the basis for non-profits to stop searching in the dark and to start a targeted dialogue. At the same time, it strengthens the credibility of the funders – because those who show what they stand for are perceived as reliable partners.

How does this change the dynamics, and what opportunities and challenges arise?

Today, funding organisations are increasingly active in the market: They scout projects, identify strategic issues and seek targeted exchanges. This increases the importance of being clearly identifiable and accessible – for funders as well as for non-profits. Organisations with precise, up-to-date profiles and transparent criteria are found more quickly and contacted more specifically. This also creates new expectations: If you are visible, you must keep your information, such as the names of the responsible persons, up to date. Transparency is not a static state, but an ongoing process. Above all, it is a clear competitive advantage for all those who actively shape this process.

What does this mean in practice today?

Only those who are visible will be found. And today, visibility is achieved on the Internet. Relevant information is a must: for funders, current funding priorities, clear criteria, direct contact channels – and if possible, also an indication of the scale of possible support. For non-profits, current areas of activity, successfully completed projects and above all a continuously updated funding history. Up-to-date information increases the likelihood of finding suitable partners – whether as a non-profit or as a funder. It is also worth actively seeking recommendations and joining relevant networks. Those who actively live transparency not only make it easier for others to access their organisation, but also create the basis for more efficient, trusting cooperation.

Anyone who provides a few clear details about their funding priorities, criteria and contact details on their Spheriq profile will be visible and easily found. This way, “Fit & Hope” creates direct added value for both sides with little effort. Getting recommendations and keeping the profile up to date also increases the reach. The “Hosting a Nonprofit Event” webinar at the end of December provides practical guidance on how organisations can create an effective profile and generate more relevant requests.
