From research to practice: MAS Philanthropy at the University of Geneva

The first cohort of the Executive Master of Advanced Studies (MAS) in Philanthropy at the University of Geneva has successfully completed the oral defence and will officially graduate in December 2025. This marks a key milestone in a programme designed to strengthen the philanthropic ecosystem through rigorous and practice-oriented learning.

UNIVERSITÉ DE GENÈVE

Tailored for professionals, the MAS helps deepen expertise, sharpen critical thinking, and bridge theory with practice. Students completed either a Master’s thesis or an internship in a philanthropic organisation, exploring topics such as:

  • Private banking and philanthropic partnerships
  • Ethical challenges in philanthropic support for research in Switzerland
  • Corporate social responsibility and corporate foundations
  • Mental health policy and practice in the UAE
  • Impact investing
  • Orphan disease foundation

“We are incredibly proud of our students’ achievements. Their theses offer fresh perspectives and concrete contributions to a more resilient, ethical, and innovative philanthropic sector”, stated co-directors Danièle Castle, Laetitia Gill, and Prof. Giuseppe Ugazio. Participants described the programme as intensive yet transformative. This university degree consolidates their knowledge, opens new career paths, and, in the words of one graduate, delivers content that is “pure gold”. Graduates now enter the field as confident, thoughtful professionals – equipped with up-to-date knowledge, hands-on experience, and a deep understanding of philanthropy’s challenges. They are ready to contribute meaningfully – and immediately – to the sector’s development.
