Effective.

Effectiveness is not created by technology alone, but by co-design. The best digital solutions come from the sector itself, Pascale Vonmont, Director of the Gebert Rüf Foundation, is convinced.

Why is “effective” more than just a buzzword?

Pascale Vonmont: Because today, impact is no longer created in isolation. Digital transformation is changing not only the tools we use, but also the way we co-create solutions. Effectiveness means co-creating technology – in line with the real needs of the sector, not in line with the roadmaps of tech companies. Supporting organisations, non-profits and experts know best where processes are stuck, where standards are lacking and where digital levers can have an impact. So, if you want to have an impact, you need to not only use technology, but also help shape its development.

Where is this heading – what opportunities and challenges are emerging?

Technological progress is rapidly accelerating. AI, automation, matching algorithms and data analysis are opening up new opportunities for intelligent support – from pre-screening to decision support and meaningful reporting. The challenge is not to be driven by technology, but to actively shape it: to identify what is really useful and to jointly set practical standards. Only then will solutions emerge that strengthen the sector, rather than creating new dependencies. In this case, effectiveness means using tools that combine everyday usability, relevance and impact.

What does this mean for today’s practice?

The most important step is to change the mode of cooperation: out of the observer role, into joint testing, learning and improvement. Set up pilot projects, exchange experiences, and systematically incorporate feedback. Do not see technology as a finished product, but as a process that grows with the sector. Those who get involved early on will have a say in which tools will prevail – and can shape them according to their own needs. It is effective to not try to reinvent the wheel alone, but to develop viable, sector-wide solutions together.

The Spheriq Academy for Digital Philanthropy (formerly: Learning Journey) is an exclusive format for partners who want to actively shape the digital transformation or closely monitor current developments. Here, visionaries and practitioners meet to exchange ideas, deepen their knowledge and jointly develop sustainable solutions. The current programme shows where the journey is heading: from AI-supported application review to intelligent matching and due diligence, to reporting that is reduced to the essentials.
